What is an Aspect Ratio?

An aspect ratio (or AR), is the ratio of the vertical to the horizontal image size. This is usually 4:3 for analog video. A widescreen monitor typically has a 16:9 video format option. Although other ratios such as 1:1, 21:9 and 32:9 exist they are less common and usually are for other specific purposes such as social media pictures, ultrawide monitors or or IMAX projectors.
