A complete air base defense solution should be multi-layered and combine elements of C-UAS, C-RAM, and SHORAD capabilities to ensure threats are eliminated in the safest and most effective manner.

C-UAS (Counter-Unmanned Aerial System)

C-UAS has become a generic term for systems that designed to detect, track and disrupt airborne threats such drones and UAVs. They are also referred to as anti-drone or anti-UAV. The most common types rely on RF triangulation or passive RF detection, which detects a UAV by its radio frequency (passive RF). Infiniti offers higher end solutions that pair RF detection with 3D radar in order to track a target even if it has no RF signal. Once a solution is detected, it is then tracked using an EO/IR PTZ camera. If considered a threat a countermeasure is deployed. In most C-UAS systems this is limited to an RF jammer which disrupts or electronically takes over control of the drone, often forcing it to land. Infiniti’s ADDS (Airborne Drone Defense System) utilizes jammers but can also integrate UAVs with net guns or HEW (High Energy Weapons) depending on the type of threat and distance needed for intervention.

C-RAM (Counter-Rocket, Artillery, Mortar)

C-RAM is a system that is designed to detect, and eliminate incoming rocket, artillery and mortar attacks to protect an area or zone from these types of attacks. C-RAM’s first formal deployment in an active combat zone was in Iraq in 2010 to protect the green zone, American embassy and bases in the region. C-RAM systems vary from vendor to vendor in cost, range and performance but are generally comprised of the same subsystems. These typically include a targeting-grade 3D or 4D radar (for early warning and detection of targets) and electro-optics imaging such as visible, SWIR, thermal and LRF (for fine projectile targeting and tracking). Systems most commonly use a high calibre high-capacity machine gun like a 20mm or 30mm equipped with tungsten, explosive incendiary or air bursts rounds but can also be quipped with RF disruption and HEW (High Energy Weapons) depending on the type of threat being countered.

SHORAD (Short-Range Air Defense)

C-RAM systems perform very well for the threats they were designed to counter, but the nature of warfare and technological capability of threats is continually evolving. The rise of unmanned AI and propulsion technology have created a new category of threats that leave traditional C-RAM and air base defense solutions limited in their response or in many cases completely ineffective based on their performance, cost, and portability. This has made SHORAD (Short-Range Air Defense) a vital part of any modern air defense solution.
